My kids absolutely LOVE to read. Whether it’s a book they’ve read 100 times before or a new find at the library, both Jenny and David can spend hours looking at and reading books. (I think they might get it from me – I’m a bit of a bookaholic!) But during the summer months when its so nice outside, reading can take a back burner to play. Giving them a little extra motivation and a bit of structure will help keep them reading all summer long!
The Book Bingo Summer Challenge
While we have a 30-minute-a-day reading minimum, I wanted to encourage my kids to read more this summer. I decided we were going to play Book Bingo, based loosely on this summer reading program we highlighted last summer.
I created a bingo board with various book prompts (theme, author, genre). Whenever they complete a “bingo” (five in a straight row), they’ll be eligible to choose a book to “purchase” from the Disney Story Central website.

I’m going to have them keep a record of their books read on our Reading Log so they can see how many pages they’ve read and remember which books they enjoyed and which they didn’t.
Summer Reading Rewards with Disney Story Central
My kids love to read. And they love Disney cartoons. So when I discovered Disney Story Central, I knew it would be a great summer reading rewards program for my kids in conjunction with our Book Bingo summer reading challenge.
I signed up for a free Disney Story Central account and created a bookshelf in the app for each of the big kids. As they get a “bingo,” I’ll transfer book tokens to their bookshelf so they can “purchase” their book reward.
Not only can each child in the family customize their bookshelf with their favorite character, they can also track their reading progress on a personal scoreboard and get book recommendations selected just for them. Disney Story Central makes it easy for your child to find books appropriate for their age with the characters they love. With an ever-growing list of titles to choose from, Disney Story Central will be your family’s very own enchanted library, accessible anywhere and anytime. Bookmark the website and/or download the free app for iPad!
Disney Story Central gives families the freedom to choose the reading experience that suits them best, whether through an annual subscription service ($7.99/mo) or a-la-carte options, using Disney Book Tokens (one token = one book).
You can even participate in Disney Story Central’s ‘Mid-Summer Light Reads’ Campaign – promoting weekly Disney reading themes — for a chance to unlock free books and enter the sweepstakes! Launching on June 11, the campaign will run through August 13.
When I showed my kids the Book Bingo boards and the Disney Story Central site, they couldn’t wait to get started. I love that this is just one more way to help them develop a love of reading!
