I’ve learned this week that waking up is not my struggle… it’s getting up. I may be revamping my original goal of being out of bed and dressed by 9am after feeling sick most of the days I attempted to do so this week… or I may give it another week before I throw in the towel.
Read my report and let me know what you think I should do…
I really struggled on Friday… I fell back asleep after my husband left for work (I’d stayed up too late the night before), and it was after 9am when I finally woke up again.
I managed to get up around 10am, but after a shower and getting the kids fed, it was almost noon by the time we finally started school.
Getting a later start, but we are finally underway. #homeschool #picheaplace
Since Chris has started only napping once a day, I’ve been trying to wait until the afternoon to put him down, so he’s been joining us at the table. He really wanted to “do school” on Friday, asking for David’s math worksheet when he was finished and then for David’s pencil.
Chris REALLY wanted to do a #math worksheet today. He grabbed David’s finished one and then asked for David’s pencil so he could add his mark. #toddler #homeschool #wantstobelikethebigkids View on Instagram
Even with the later start, we were still done at a reasonable time, and we finished up all our work for the week. I think we’re all really going to like our “new” four-day school week (Tuesday through Friday).
The kids were a bit tired, so they spent the afternoon watching a LeapFrog DVD and playing quietly in their rooms.
I think I have some tired kids. I couldn’t help but laugh when I looked out to the living room where the kids are watching a #LeapFrog DVD. #homeschool
I was able to get some work done in the afternoon, and when J got home Friday night, I ran to Pizza Hut to pick up some pizza. It’d been awhile since we’d ordered pizza, so it was a nice treat. It would have been nice to have a Family Game Night, but the kids were pretty tired, so we put them to bed early.
[I didn’t take a picture of what I was wearing.]
J had to work on Saturday (his new schedule is Tuesday through Saturday), so the kids and I settled in for a lazy day. Our landlord was supposed to come over at some point to fix our toilet (it had a leaky seal on the flapper and had been “phantom flushing” for a few days), but otherwise we had nothing on the agenda.
I finally crawled out of bed just after noon to fix lunch for the kids and myself (leftover pizza for the win). I spent the afternoon enjoying the smell of baking bread (hooray for my bread machine), the glow and heat of the fireplace, the background sound of the kids playing nicely together, and several hours of One Tree Hill via DVD on my laptop.
Waiting an hour for @jpichea to get home from work to eat supper might be torture… #freshbakedbread View on Instagram
Our landlord came over late afternoon, bringing a couple of his kids to play with Jenny and David (our families are friends, and the kids are similar ages) while he fixed the toilet. I watched the kids run around and helped David attempt to keep under control (he tends to lose control quickly with high activity) with some Peace & Calming essential oil.
There are a few more kids in my house now… and they’re playing “campfire” again. :)
After our landlord and his kids left, I made dinner (Cheddar Broccoli Soup and homemade bread), fed the kids and myself, bathed the boys, and put the kids to bed. J finally made it home about 8:30pm (he was supposed to be done at 5pm) and pretty much crashed into bed after a shower and some food.
I stayed up late (again) watching One Tree Hill and finally crawled into bed at 1am.
We didn’t have to be “early” to church on Sunday morning, and having stayed up late the night before, I finally crawled out of bed and into the shower about 8:30am (we leave about 9:15am).
After church, we came home and I made spaghetti for lunch before nap/quiet time for the kids. I cleaned up lunch and started the dishwasher then started putting together a meal plan for the week (and subsequent grocery list). I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with my mom, catching her up from some meetings she missed at church last week (she is our church website admin) while helping J do laundry (he did most of it) before heading to choir practice at church.
By the time I was ready for bed, I was feeling fairly out of sorts and needing some encouragement so I asked my Facebook readers to comment with their favorite “refocusing on Christ” passages. I read through those while listening to the Chris Tomlin station on Pandora and fell asleep shortly after midnight.
After a busy (and emotionally exhausting) Sunday, I was so thankful we didn’t have school scheduled for Monday morning. I ended up staying in bed all morning (the kids were playing nicely together and came in a few times), not getting up until lunchtime.
[I never made it out of my pajamas, so I didn’t take a picture of my outfit.]
The kids played well together all day (hooray!), and I was able to spend the entire afternoon getting lots of work done, including researching and writing a post: Sunday = a day of UNrest.
I’ve discovered that waking up isn’t the problem most mornings… getting out of bed is where I struggle. Tuesday I woke up when my alarm went off at 7:30am, but I didn’t manage to crawl out of bed and into the shower until 8:59am (just barely making my self-imposed deadline of 9am).
We were out the door at 9:45am for Jenny’s piano lesson and to run errands around town including a stop at the library and the grocery store.
I’ve always been an “I’ll find it myself” type person at the library, not wanting to “bother” the librarians, but on Tuesday, the librarian “forced” me to let her help Jenny and me find some books, and I learned that librarians can be a great resource and they actually enjoy helping you find what you’re looking for… no more making book lists on my own – I’m tapping into this great resource from now on!
By the time we made it home and got the groceries put away, it was 12:30pm, so we ate lunch before getting to our school work. David was fairly tired and unwilling to focus, so I didn’t force the issue and let him just play with his Legos while helping Jenny get her work done.
I set my alarm for 6:20am on Wednesday morning in an attempt to see the blood moon eclipse that was scheduled to happen. (We’d missed the one in the spring due to heavy cloud cover.) The moment my feet hit the floor, David came bounding out of his room wide awake, managing to wake Christopher up as well. I went and woke up Jenny after verifying that we could indeed see the moon, and we all watched together for about an hour.
This one one of those times I wish I had a better lens on my DSLR. That, coupled with the ETREMELY BRIGHT light on the side of our neighbor’s garage, made it a bit difficult to get a good photo. #eclipse #bloodmoon #redbloodmoon View on Instagram
After the moon was no longer visible, the kids decided they were “up for the day” and sat down to eat breakfast. Jenny asked if she could start school early in order to be done early, and I agreed. I grabbed my coffee and sat down in my recliner while she got started at the table and the boys played.
When I sleep in, my kids do too. When my alarm went off at 6:20am this morning (to watch the eclipse), all three kids joined me in getting up early – the boys did so of their own accord. So now it’s 7:10. We are at least 2 hours “ahead of schedule,” and Jenny just asked if they can start school early. #itsgoingtobealongafternoon #homeschool #picheaplace
Chris was acting really tired still (he doesn’t normally get up until after 9am), so I put him down for a nap at 8am. Twenty minutes later, I was feeling sick to my stomach and headed to my own bed for a nap.
[I didn’t get dressed until later in the day, so I didn’t take a photo.]
I woke up three hours later (yup – I was really tired) and Jenny was getting ready to make lunch for herself and her brothers – she had finished all her school work and had practiced the piano (which is what had woken me up). I got up and started working about 12:30pm.
David was scheduled to leave at 8:30am on a mini-vacation with my aunt, so I set my alarm for 7:30am. I actually woke up before the alarm went off (as my husband was getting ready to leave for work), and I managed to get out of bed about 7:45am. After sending him off for two days of fun, I threw on a sweatshirt and jeans and got Jenny started with school.
When Jenny was done with school, we headed to a friend’s house to pick up some pumpkins. We’ll probably carve them sometime next week – closer to Halloween.
Thanks for all the #pumpkins, Mr. Fales! @grammyk13 View on Instagram
Jenny asked if we could finally have the “Mommy-and-Me Date” that the Tooth Fairy had gifted her with two years ago when she’d lost her first tooth, and she decided a trip to Dollar Tree would make a perfect date. We stopped at Dollar Tree and she got to browse for about 20 minutes while I chased Chris around the store, returning the various random objects he’d pick up as he cruised the aisles to their spots on the shelves.
When we got home, Jenny requested to take a walk and to put on the nail stickers she’d gotten at Dollar Tree. It wasn’t the “Mommy-and-Me Date” that I’d envisioned when giving her the coupon, but she thought it was great, and that’s all that counts!
P.S. If you’re interested in “Mommy-and-Me Date” ideas, this Frugal Father-Daughter Date Ideas eBook is full of great ideas that work for any parent-child date!
When Jenny lost her first tooth (two years ago or so), the #toothfairy gifted her with a #mommyandme date in lieu of cash. Today, she was finally able to redeem that date coupon for a trip to the Dollar Tree (although her littlest brother tagged along). While there she picked up some nail stickers, and I “did her nails” when we got home. “That was the best date ever, Mommy!” #itdoesnttakemuch #picheaplace
I’m starting to rethink the whole “getting up by 9am” goal… especially after I was feeling sick to my stomach again this morning when I woke up too early. I woke up around 7:30am while my husband was getting ready for work, but I stayed in bed and fell back asleep because I felt so icky. When I woke up again around 9:10am, I played on my phone for a bit while Jenny got up with Chris.
It was after 10:30am when I finally crawled out of bed. So much for getting the day off to an early start.
I have a number of things I wanted to get accomplished today (since I haven’t felt productive most of the week), so I made a list and am trying to work through it, one item at a time.
I’m hoping to make it to the Homecoming Game at my alma mater tonight, since I haven’t been to one of their games in over ten years – Friday night football used to be one of my favorite times of the week, and I miss it like crazy!
The rest of our weekend is jam-packed once again… what’s on tap for your weekend?
