I’m pretty sure we’ve been unofficially on Spring Break for the past couple of weeks (it’s been a bit chaotic around here with our spring traveling schedule), but last week we took an “unofficial” Spring Break Staycation.
Family Fun in Chicago
J had to be in Chicago all day Thursday for work, so the kids and I decided to join him for a mini vacation and change of scenery. (Not that our multiple trips to Michigan and back all month long weren’t enough traveling for a pregnant mom and two kids!) We packed up the van and headed out.
Chicago is only about two and a half hours from our house, so we really consider it more of a staycation than a vacation when we go.
We stayed at the Hyatt Place in Lombard (west suburbs) as it was near where J had to be for work on Thursday.
We loved the hotel! Our room on the 5th floor was spacious (even had a partial wall dividing the “living” and “sleeping” areas), and we could even see the top of the downtown Chicago skyline from our window.
The kids were constantly looking out the window to see the skyline – they thought it was great!
Wednesday night, we were able to have dinner with my sister, brother-in-law, and niece (they live in the city). We choose Chipotle since it’s not a restaurant we have in our town and we all love to eat there. Then they treated us to Oberweis Dairy for a special local treat.
Thursday, J was gone for work most of the day, so the kids and I hung out at the Hyatt Place.
I was awake early enough to capture the sun rising over the city – it was so pretty! (The downtown skyline is in the lower left corner.)
We enjoyed a yummy (seriously the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had) continental breakfast followed by spending over an hour in the hotel pool.
By the time we were done swimming and had showered, we were all tired, so we crashed on our beds in front of the 42” flat screen TV in our room.
After a while, we took our Chipotle leftovers and some fruit we’d brought along down to the lobby to use the microwave and eat our lunch. Lunch was followed by “rest time” for the kids while I used the hotel WIFI to get some work done.
When J was done working for the day, we decided we wanted Chicago-style deep dish pizza for dinner. We found a Giordano’s not too far from our hotel, so we called our order ahead and headed out to the restaurant. It was so good!
Back at the Hyatt Place, we got ready for bed, hoping the kids would crash early since they’d been up late the last several nights, but the NCAA March Madness tournament on TV held their attention.
FINALLY, they fell asleep, and I couldn’t help but capture this sweet image.
Friday morning, we enjoyed another delicious continental breakfast at the Hyatt Place before packing up our bags to head to Michigan (once again) for the remainder of the weekend.
Even though we didn’t “see the sights” of Chicago, we had a great time getting away together as a family on our “unofficial” Spring Break Staycation!
What did/will your family do for Spring Break this year?
