Visit the Library
Though we spend a lot of time at the local library during the school year, summertime extends our love of the library. It’s in the summer that we lengthen our list of books to read and allow our library bag to overflow.
In fact, we had to upgrade our “library bag” to a “library tote” after last week – we needed more space!
Our local library hosts a reading challenge each summer, and we are quick to sign up. In the past two weeks, each of the kids has logged over 100 books, and I’ve managed to log a couple thousand pages.
Does your library host a summer reading challenge? What motivates you to read in the summer?
Read a Book
As you may have deduced from our love of the library, we love to read at our house. It’s rare to find a member of our family without a book {or Kindle} in hand or at least nearby.
Summertime provides us with lots of “extra” time to get cozy with a good book – whether inside in the air conditioner or outside on the porch or laying on a blanket in the yard.
Thanks to the extended hours of daylight, our reading often starts early in the morning and ends late into the night!
I love it when I walk into a room and find Jenny reading a book to David – it makes my mommy-heart smile!
Do you find yourself reading more or less during the summer?
Go Beyond the Book
Not only do we love to read books, but books are often the catalyst for learning activities that we do. After reading a book together, we love to go beyond the book and build memories around it.
Life as Mom has just released a new eBook called Fifty Books to Enjoy with Kids that is designed specifically to help you go beyond the book with your kids!
I was able to get my hands on a pre-release copy of this amazing new eBook, and I was excited to see some of my favorite children’s books included, as well as some new-to-me titles that I look forward to reading with Jenny and David.
Fifty Books to Enjoy with Kids not only lists titles and information about great children’s literature, but it details extension activities to take the story farther, to play together, to explore together, and to enjoy the novelty of a great book. Perfect for parents with kids 2-8 years old, this book is the summer reading program {or perfect homeschool literature curriculum} you will want to be sure to get your hands on!
Now thru July 3rd, this amazing book is available at the introductory price of ONLY $5!!
What a perfect addition to your summer bucket list!

Our library does have a summer reading program – I always signed my kids up when they were young. But this is the first summer I have ever signed myself up.
Has signing up for the reading program helped you to read more so far this summer?? I always find that having an incentive {even a small one} helps me push myself!
The 50 Books to Enjoy With Kids looks really good, Ashley.
We have been reading a lot this summer – this is why I love summer! My son is really enjoying longer chapter books now and has been reading the Time Warp Trio series. My daughter has been reading biographies of missionaries, which she loves. My husband and I are focusing on the classics… I’m reading Jane Eyre right now (can you believe I had never read it before??). We’re also listening to The Hobbit on audio and I’m reading Harry Potter aloud to the kids. (I had been feeling lazy this summer, but listing it all out makes me feel better!).
I enjoyed your post!
I’ve actually never read most of the “classics” myself! I’m currently working on Pride and Prejudice {I’ve seen the movie multiple times, but never read the novel}. :)
I haven’t heard of any reading programs through our local library – something to check out for sure!
Not sure how much more I read in the summer than other times of year. In the winter, I’m all cooped up in the house, but long summer evenings on the porch with a book are just heavenly!
I find I tend to err towards TV in the winter {when more shows are “in season”} and more towards books in the summer {when shows are “on break”}.
Yuppers! My 2 youngest have signed up for the library’s summer reading program. My girl has a goal of 1440 minutes and my youngest son 300. Our favorite place to read is at the lake and beach! After swimming, lying on a towel, read, read, read! LOL
I wish my kids were old enough to enjoy reading at the beach. They do best in their rooms during quiet time or at bed time when the distractions are few.
We finished up our summer reading requirements this week. Sadly in our area it only means 20 books. Like your family books are a staple of our day from early until I tuck the kids into bed. I am not a reader by nature but once we decided to homeschooling I have challenged myself to read 1 book a month. Hopefully that’s a step in the right direction
Our kids get to choose their book goal, w/ a maximum prize limit of 150. I’m pretty sure they’ve both overly exceeded that goal in the last three weeks!
And way to go w/ the one book a month goal! What book are you reading right now?
