Too often, we tend to blame our attitudes on our circumstances. This is an issue of mind control: learning to take every thought captive and making our minds up to choose joy, no matter the circumstance.
Superhero Parenting: Mind Control
As superhero parents, we are setting an example for our kids, and our example needs to be one of Christlikeness, and that can only be accomplished if we are accessing our super power of mind control.
“Take every thought captive to obey Christ” [2 Corinthians 10:5b, ESV]
Each moment of life is directly affected by the attitude with which it is approached. If our kids see us blaming our attitudes and actions on exterior circumstances (failing to access our super power of mind control), they will learn to blame their attitudes on exterior circumstances. If, however, we are diligent to utilize our mind control, we can set an example of choosing a positive response to the circumstances life throws our way, even when the circumstances are less than desirable.
In Philippians 2, Paul instructs believers to “have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus” [v5]. The attitude he’s referring to is one of humility. The circumstances would have dictated that Christ “ought” to have had an attitude of superiority – after all, He was God. But Christ showed us through His example that attitude is not to be dictated by circumstance.
You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control the attitude with which you face your life.
Father, I pray You would help me to understand that I must take every thought captive and seek to control my attitude through the power of the Holy Spirit, lining it up with Scripture. I pray that my attitude toward each moment of life would honor God and would set a positive example for my children to follow. If I do not choose to exercise my super power of mind control, I am choosing to allow my circumstances to dictate my attitude. I pray that You, by Your Spirit, would show me when I default into this mode and prompt me to repent and access the Source of my superhero parenting.
