I wasn’t raised on the classics, and I still struggle to “make” myself read the classics. But I want Jenny and David to have the opportunity to read and love the classics (even though I don’t), so I was really excited to be introduced to Alicewinks – a multimedia iBook, created in celebration of Alice’s 150th anniversary, that brings the timeless illustrations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to life for digital audiences through animated video and rich narration.

Knowing I had a REALLY long to-do list on Monday, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to introduce Jenny and David to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I opened Alicewinks in iBooks on my iPad and had the two of them sit in the recliner next to me while I worked so I could listen as they read, watched, and interacted with the iBook.
Alicewinks was an instant hit:
- Getting to read/play on the iPad? Check.
- An interactive iBook? Check.
- Classic illustrations from twelve different early 20th century artists animated to capture their attention? Check.
- Having a book read aloud to them? Check.
- A separate section for each chapter for easy time chunking? Check.
As the kids explored Alicewinks, I listened along and watched as they interacted with the iBook. I was honestly amazed at how well the iBook captured and kept their attention. After each interactive section (broken up by chapter), there were several “full page” illustrations with captions that Jenny would read to David as they “flipped the pages.”
Had I handed Jenny a hard copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to read, I would have had low expectations for it holding her attention (let alone David sitting still long enough for her to read it to him) for more than a few minutes. Handing them the iPad with the Alicewinks iBook held their attention for over an hour before they needed a break from “screen time,” and they were eager for their next “screen time” to keep reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
