Little House on the Prairie Notebooking
Little House on the Prairie Notebooking
A few months ago, Jenny started reading the Little House on the Prairie series. As she read, she started notebooking her journey through the series.
Cover Page
We started by creating a cover page for her Little House on the Prairie notebook.
Jenny drew a picture of Laura and Mary riding on the covered wagon and we use letter stickers to highlight the title. We also included the author’s name on the cover page.
Main Characters
Next, we created a number of pages to highlight the main characters as we met them.
Jenny drew a picture of each main character, and I wrote the character’s name on a piece of colored paper {pink for girls and blue for boys}.
We glued the pictures into the Little House on the Prairie notebook and left extra pages for additional characters we’d meet as we read through the book.
Chapter Summary Notebooking Pages
I created some chapter summary notebooking pages for Jenny to fill out as she read through The Little House on the Prairie.
This chapter summary notebooking page will work with any chapter book that you want to have your child notebook through.

Jenny filled out a chapter summary notebooking page at the end of each chapter that she read: chapter title, a picture of something that happened in the chapter, a list of places mentioned in the chapter, a list of the people in the chapter, and a list of the words she read but didn’t know the meaning of in the chapter.
Word I Learned
As she read through each chapter, Jenny kept a list of any words she came across that she didn’t know what it meant.
Each of the words Jenny didn’t know she got to look up in the dictionary.
We used small slips of paper folded into an accordion shape to write out the word and its definition and glued it into the “words I learned” section of the chapter summary notebooking page.
Still reading…
Unfortunately, as with most projects around our house, we didn’t get very far before we lost interest and gave up on the project.
I’ve set the started notebook aside along with the Little House series, and I’ll bring it back out when Jenny shows interest in reading the books again.
Additional Notebooking Resources
Although we haven’t done a lot of notebooking yet, I’m excited to try it out in various forms and on various topics throughout our homeschooling experience. Thanks to Notebooking Success, I have a better understanding of what notebooking “is” and lots of ideas for implementing it within the structure of our curriculum and topics of study.
I’ve also bookmarked The Notebooking Fairy for easy access to all her free notebooking printables!
How do you use notebooking in your homeschool?
Would you please clarify what would go in the spots titled “Places I went” and “People I met”? Thanks.
“Places I Went”: different places {i.e. towns, homes, parks, etc} that the characters visited in that chapter
“People I Met”: new characters that were introduced in that chapter
This looks great! I’m going to be starting the Little House series with my kids soon and we will be using some of your ideas :) Thanks for sharing!
This is a great idea. We started reading the Little House (again) and was thinking about notebooking, but didn’t really know how to approach it.
Isn’t this the cutest idea ever?! My six-year-old loves to read, but she can get bogged down by the details. This is a great project for kids to do during the summer (or anytime, really) to keep the comprehension skills sharp! Brilliant!
I thought it was a great way to help her stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed when she started reading chapter books. :)
I get an error page when I try to print the chapter notebooking page. Is there any way you could fix it? I’d love to be able to print a copy :)
So sorry about that… I was doing some backend work on the blog and managed to “break” it. Here’s a link that should work: https://picheaplace.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/chapter-summary-notebooking-page.pdf
Wow, you’re super quick! Thanks so much!
Not a problem – hope you enjoy using it! :)
