Praying God’s Word

I don’t know about you, but I need direction and focus when I sit down to pray.

One of the best modes of prayer that I’ve found is praying God’s Word.

Bible Study 1

When I don’t have the words to pray, I can pray the Scriptures.

  • When a friend is hurting, I can pray Zephaniah 3.17 over her.
  • When I am anxious, I can pray Philippians 4.6.
  • When I’m tempted to fear, I can pray 1 Timothy 1.7.

When I pray God’s Word, not only do I know that I am praying according to His will, but I am engraving His truths on my heart.

And I’m not the only one who has discovered this amazing truth…

Praying God’s Word has been one of the most life-changing ways I’ve learned to live in the security of His promises… When we pray God’s words out loud, and hear them, the Holy Spirit engraves them on our hearts and write them in our thoughts. We internalize God’s truth as our faith grows and we are transformed from the inside out.” – Renee Swope {A Confident Heart}

“I love to take the Word and wash it over my boys in prayer, substituting their names in when I can and asking the Lord to bring it to fruition in their lives.” {Brooke McGlothlin, Warrior Prayers}

And so, when I want to pray for someone, I start with God’s Word. I look for Scriptures that are relevant to his/her situation, and I begin to pray God’s Word over him/her.

Here are some great resources to get you started with praying God’s Word over your family:

  1. Would love to hear other scriptures you pray! I love hearing from others about how they pray, especially praying scriptures specifically.

    When praying for others (or myself) for those times I don’t know what to pray, I like Ephesians 3:16-19. {1. Power 2. Insight}

    When praying for peace in difficult situations, I like Isaiah 26:3-4.

    Look forward to seeing what others pray!

    1. This morning I prayed Psalm 63:1-8 over the ladies in my HelloMornings accountability group.
      As I see a need, I ask God to give me a Scripture. Sometimes He brings one I’ve memorized to mind, and other times I have to do a bit of digging with my Bible concordance, but He is always faithful to provide!
      I’ll be sharing more resources on 31daystopray.com over the next few months. I’m working on a special project for October (Pastor Appreciation Month) to help people pray for their pastors.

  2. Leigh Ann, Ephesians 3:16-19 was my Passage of the Year a couple of years ago! I tend to pray the commands / instructions over myself, asking for help to obey them. Also, of course, the promises in Scripture. Psalm 32:8 is a favorite, since I tend to waffle around when I have a decision to make.

  3. Great post! I don’t know how to share this without it sounding like a plug… but it’s not! :) I just wanted to share a post that I did that relates to what you are sharing and thought it was easier to share that way. :) In my post about prayer, I had broken my study into the Who, What, When, Where and Why of prayer and in this post http://thethingoftheday.blogspot.com/2011/08/praywhen-we-feel-like-it-part-1.html I kind of talked about what you shared and asked about in this post.  :) Blessings! :)
