We’re not normally “spontaneous” people, but last night when Jason got home from work, I asked him if he’d be up for a picnic dinner from Subway at the park about 10 minutes away as I had discovered there was going to be a “media flight” balloon launch in promotion of next weekend’s Hot Air Jubilee. He agreed, so we grabbed our shoes and jumped in the van.

The weather was overcast and looked like it could rain at any moment, but the Hot Air Jubilee Facebook page was still stating the balloons would be launching around 6:30pm, so we enjoyed our dinner at the nearby playground and picnic area and then joined some friends on the outfield of the ball diamond.

Just as the crews began to lay out the balloons for inflation, the clouds disappeared and the sun shone brightly. It was a GORGEOUS night for a balloon launch!

The kids enjoyed getting as close to the hot air balloons as we would let them!

As the hot air balloons took flight over the trees, Chris decided it would be fun to chase after Sugar Bear.

I took over 450 pictures in the hour or so that we were there… what an incredible experience to be up-close and personal to the hot air balloons!

And then, as we drove home, we realized that the balloons had flown in the direction we were headed.

What a fun (and spontaneous) evening we had as a family – making memories that will last a lifetime!

How are you making memories with your family this summer?
